O2 Launches Broadband Service this Month

O2 O2, the mobile phone network operator owned by Spain’s Telefonica, is launching its residential broadband service on October 15.

The company, which expects one million broadband users by 2010, is to offer heavily discounted internet deals to its monthly subscribers.

The deals available to O2 mobile subscribers will range from £7.50 per month for an eight megabit per second connection, to £15 per month for up to 20 megabits.

Non O2 Pay Monthly and non-O2 customers will pay an additional £10 per month on each of the available packages.

O2 acquired Be Broadband last year for £50 million, with rumours floating around that it would have a broadband service up and running by January this year.

However, O2 was reluctant to invest further in its newly purchased broadband network, which means that the service will cover only half of the British population when it launches.

O2 is the UK’s largest mobile phone company, with 17.8 million customers.

Matthew Key, CEO, O2 UK, said: ” The UK broadband market is fuelled by price competition but customers are also frustrated over hidden costs, bad customer service and technical complexity.

“O2 Broadband intends to shake up the market and be a breath of fresh air by offering a technologically advanced service which also meets customer demand for a simple set up, receiving what you pay for with no broken promises.”
