O2 has launched a new app that allows users to make and receive phone calls and texts via tablet, computer devices, as well as smartphones.
O2’s Tu Go deducts charges from the user’s monthly call allowance at a standard call rate, unlike Skype and other third-party Voip (voice over internet protocol) services that work on a credit-purchasing basis.
Up to five devices can be linked to a Tu Go account, enabling users to take their phone number on to multiple connected devices across wi-fi and 3G/4G.
The move, previously restricted to 1,000 testers, shows 02’s intent to challenge other audio-video apps such as Skype, which are used across the globe.
“TU Go is a clear demonstration of the way we are bringing new technological possibilities to our customers – taking access to our mobile network beyond the mobile phone,” said Sally Cowdry, Marketing and Consumer Director at O2 in the UK.
“While it is still in its early stages, and TU Go is a first step, we have plans to develop the services we can offer using this platform – bringing our customers an ever-wider range of digital services on a wider range of devices.”
Jeremy Green, telco strategy analyst at Ovum said that the application, “delivers tangible differentiation for Telefónica and is a lesson for its peers in integration with carrier telephony services.”
He added: “Significantly, the integration with native communications services (telephony and SMS) means that users are not restricted to communicating just with other adopters. Exchanging calls and messages with users of basic services works well, with information (e.g. caller ID and dialed number) shared between the native dialer app and the TuGo service.
“All communication is organised in threaded timelines and displays regardless of the device used, including both the PC and Macintosh apps.”
Tu Go is available for all O2 pay monthly customers on Android, Apple iOS and Windows 7.
