Online Display Advertising Rose 25% In 2006

Spending on online display advertising rose to more than £147 million in 2006, up 25%, according to new figures from Nielsen Media Research.

The only other sectors to record rises were national newspapers, up 2.1% to £1.5 billion and outdoor, up 1% to £751 million.

The sector with the worst performance was regional press, which was down more than 11% year on year, to £618 million.

The TV market was down to £3.8 billion in 2006, from £4 billion in 2005, a fall of 5.9%.

The Nielsen figures show that magazine revenue was down by 3.6%, whilst cinema and radio fell by 2.6% and 0.8% respectively.

According to ZenithOptimedia, the internet is expected to have a 12.9% share of total UK adspend in 2007, growing to 17.2% by 2008 (see ZenithOptimedia Downgrades UK Ad Growth Forecast).

A recent forecast from Merrill Lynch estimates that the UK will experience 5.0% advertising growth in 2007 (see 5.0% Ad Growth Forecast For UK In 2007).
