OTT and ‘cord shaving’ will not kill broadcast model

Eight in ten people agree that the rise of over-the-top and ‘cord shaving’ will not kill the broadcast model, according to new global research conducted by TV Connect.

The results of the Connected 100 survey reveal that while the majority of respondents did not think that OTT and ‘cord shaving’ will threaten the broadcast model, 79% said that the broadcast user interface will need to be improved in order for pay TV to continue to stay ahead of OTT competition.

The research – conducted in order to examine the changing trends in the connected entertainment ecosystem and better develop strategies to profit from internet TV – also revealed that over 67% of respondents do not believe that Netflix will be the dominant OTT provider in five years’ time, with respondents instead predicting that the major players will be Apple (42%) and Amazon/LOVEFiLM (40%).

“The Connected 100 responses reflect the changes that are already happening in the connected entertainment industry,” said Joanna Jones, events director for TV Connect.

“As expected, the research highlighted that the broadcast community sees cord shaving and OTT as threats. However, the survey also suggests that TV providers will combine TV Everywhere and improvements in the user interface to stay ahead of the OTT specialists.”
