Over 15 Million US Broadband Subscribers, Says Leichtman

The leading US cable and DSL providers have a total of 15.6 million high-speed internet subscribers according to new findings from the Leichtman Research Group.

The major providers were responsible for 1.68 million new subscribers in the third quarter of 2002. This represented the highest recorded increase of the year and exceeded net additions for the third quarter of 2001 by 400,000.

The top cable companies had 68% of the net broadband additions for the quarter and now account for more than 10 million broadband internet subscribers.

“The third quarter results demonstrate strong continued adoption of broadband internet in the United States,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, Inc. “While cable operators lost over 250,000 video subscribers in the third quarter, the industry-wide focus on high-value customers paid off in cable’s growth of high-speed internet subscribers.”
