Pattison Nominated As New IPA President

The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising council has nominated David Pattison, worldwide chief executive of PHD Network to succeed Stephen Woodford of WCRS as president of the IPA.

Pattison is the first media agency chief to be nominated for the position, expected to undertake the two year tenure from April 2005 if elected. The announcement comes at the end of a three month selection process by the presidential nominating committee which was led by the IPA’s immediate past president, Bruce Haines, group chief executive of Leo Burnett.

If unopposed Pattison will be proposed on behalf of the nominations committee at the Special Council Meeting immediately after the IPA’s annual general meeting on the 19 April 2005.

Commenting on his nomination, Pattison said: “I am both humbled and excited by the prospect of doing this job. The past and present Presidents have made sure that the IPA is in great shape. I will do my best, over the next two years, to ensure that it not only remains that way but continues to evolve to meet the challenges it faces.”

Pattison recently returned to London after moving to New York to set up PHD USA in 2002. Pattison created PHD with Jonathan Durden and Nick Horswell in 1990, before selling the company to AMV.BBDO in 1996 following which it became part of Omnicom in 2000.

Pattison has also held the position of joint media director of WCRS and worked at TBWA and Masius Wynne-Williams. If successful, the move to become president of the IPA will see him follow in Stephen Woodford’s steps as he steps down after two years. Woodford was nominated for the position at the end of 2002, taking up his post in early 2003 (see Woodford Set To Become New IPA President).

Other officer nominations have been made by the nominations committee, including that of John Banks, group chairman and chief executive of FCB, for the position of Hon. Secretary and Tony Fenton, finance director of Mediacom, for the position of Hon. Treasurer. Both nominations are unopposed at present.
