PPA Appoints Emap Boss As New Chairman

PPA Logo PPA Marketing, the trade body promoting consumer magazines as an advertising medium, has appointed Paul Keenan, Emap Consumer Media’s chief executive, as its new Chairman.

The appointment will see Keenan overseeing the various activities of PPA Marketing in the promotion of magazines, taking up the mantle as ABC data reveals a period of sustained growth for the consumer sector, following a number of high-profile launches including Grazia, Pick Me Up and TV Quick.

New figures also show consumer expenditure on magazines exceeding £2bn for the first time (see Consumer Magazine Spending Tops £2 Billion), while the PPA has published its Magazines Uncovered research, demonstrating an in crease in product sales of 11.6% on average as a result of magazine advertising.

Commenting on his appointment, Keenan said: “Consumer behaviour is changing swiftly in terms of media consumption, which will in turn revolutionise the role of the media. Our challenge at PPA Marketing is to demonstrate that the magazine medium is increasing in relevance and engagement with its key audiences – the readers and advertisers. Good magazines are modern, relentlessly relevant, fresh, surprising, constantly renewing – this should be apparent to all. PPA Marketing harnesses the collective power of PPA publishers, to constantly demonstrate the effectiveness of the consumer magazine medium.”

Since joining Emap 13 years ago, Keenan has been responsible for a range of the company’s operations in consumer and B2B markets, overseeing the launches of Zoo, Closer and Grazia as well as the acquisition of Wagadon titles The Face, Arena and Arena Homme Plus.

Keenan was appointed chief executive of Emap Consumer Media in September 2001, taking responsibility for Emap Advertising in 2004 before being appointed to the main Emap board in March this year. The new role sees him replace Victoria Scott, publisher of Readers Digest UK, who stepped down after over sixteen months in the role.
