Publishers Must Keep Pace in Technology Race

The UK’s publishing industry faces a double challenge of globalisation and new technology, according to a Department Of Trade and Industry report, Publishing in the Knowledge Economy. The report, carried out by PIRA International, shows that the industry is one of the largest in the country, employing more than 160,000 people and is worth £22bn.

Speaking at the launch of the study, Stephen Timms, ecommerce and competitiveness minister said, “Overall, the report shows that publishers are highly optimistic about the impact of globalisation and social changes such as the emergence of a technologically aware generation. They are positive about the opportunities of new technologies to drive efficiency and create new products and services.”

“Despite high levels of success, we can not afford to stand still. And indeed, even since the report was concluded, there have been considerable developments on key areas such as media ownership, broadband and postal services. Government and industry will consider the findings and recommendations of this report very carefully.”
