PVR Market Maturing

The worldwide installed base of PVR products is on track to reach 44.6 million at year-end 2007, up from 33.9 million at the end of 2006, according to a new report from In-Stat.

Mike Paxton, In-Stat analyst, said: “Long-term prospects for the market remain bright, as strong demand from pay-TV service providers for PVR-enabled digital set top box products will sustain growth.”

In 2008, Personal Video Recorder (PVR) product unit shipments are forecasted to surpass 22.6 million, up from 19.6 million in 2007, said In-Stat.

By 2011, annual worldwide PVR product unit shipments are projected to reach 31.6 million.

Recent research from Attentional has found that personal video recorders (PVRs) do not significantly affect viewing choices.

Attentional said that according to surveys where respondents are asked about their viewing, viewers say that they watch more TV than they did before they got Sky+. However, the “peoplemeters” used by large continuous panels say that they PVR owners watch less TV (see PVRs Do Not Significantly Affect Viewing Choices).

Meanwhile, Leichtman Research Group found that more than one in every five households in the United States now have a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) – up from about one in every thirteen households just two years ago (see DVRs Now In Over One In Five US Households).

Leichtman also found that 45% of DVR owners record five or fewer programmes per week, and whilst 84% of DVR owners said that the ability to skip commercials was very important, just 8% of DVR owners said it was the greatest benefit of having a DVR.
