RAJAR figures for Q2 2011 saw stand-out performances from a number of commercial radio stations, particularly Absolute Radio.
All Radio enjoyed its highest ever reach once again – up to 47.6 million listeners, while All Commercial is up 3.5% on last year.
Commercial radio managed to gain ground on the BBC’s share of listening once again after posting a 1.1% increase in Q2, while the BBC suffered a small -0.8% decline.
In the national market, there were positive results for the networks, while individual stations continued to gain listeners. Total Global Radio (UK) put in a good performance, with its total reach surpassing the 20 million mark for the first time. Bauer’s Radio Total Portfolio also performed well, up 6.2% YoY to 13.8 million listeners.
BBC Radio 2 is a non-mover at the top of the breakfast show chart, while BBC Radio 4 is closing the gap on Chris Moyles and his gang in second place. However, the real success stories was seen by Total Absolute Radio Network in the national listings. In London, Capital London’s Johnny Vaughan and Lisa Snowdon continue to reign the breakfast chart despite a -6.8% drop on Q1. Magic 105.4 has jumped back into second place, while Heart sits in third (Heart 106.2 FM recorded a -7.9% QoQ decline in Q2).
It’s all change in London, with Magic racing to the top spot after an impressive 14.4% QoQ increase and Capital London slipping down in to second place after a -4.7% QoQ drop in reach.
22.1 million people are tuning in via a digital receiver each week, up from 20 million people in Q2 2010. A rise in reach and hours has also pushed Digital Radio’s share of listening to 26.9% – accounting for more than one quarter of all radio listening.
Meanwhile, listening to digital radio via other platforms such as mobiles, digital televisions and the internet continues to grow in popularity.
