The first RAJAR results released today show Independent Local Radio to take a 31.2% share of total radio listening with a weekly reach of 44%. The first national independent radio station Classic FM has fared well with a weekly reach of 9%, this compares with Radio 3’s reach of 5%.
The survey was conducted between September 21 and December 20 1992 using methodology substantively different from its predessesor JICRAR. RAJAR points out that it is not, therefore, possible to make direct comparisons.
Many of the results vary from those produced by JICRAR and they have been released with the proviso that a considerable amount of work is still to be undertaken to validate them.
Atlantic 252, which was not allowed to be part of JICRAR, recorded a reach of 9%. Among the ILR stations Capital FM’s reach was 29% and Capital Gold’s reach was 18%. London stations Kiss and Jazz recorded weekly reaches of 8% and 6% respectively.
Stations recording high reaches included Clyde FM (38%), Downtown Radio (38%), Broadland (41%), Fox FM (37%) and Plymouth Sound (37%). At the other end of the scale Spectrum recorded a weekly reach of just 3%.
