Samsung unveils new metallic smartphone

Samsung has today unveiled a new metallic design for its latest Galaxy Alpha smartphone.

At less than 7mm thick, the device is also one of the slimmest ever produced by the South Korean company and is equipped with a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display as well as an advanced camera and real time HDR.

The Galaxy Alpha also includes an “ultra power saving mode”, a finger print scanner and connectivity with the latest Samsung Gear Fit wearable technology.

The device will be available at the beginning of September and at launch will be available in black, white, gold, silver and blue.

“The Galaxy Alpha was built and designed based on the specific desires of the consumer market,” said JK Shin, head of mobile communication at Samsung. “With an entirely new appearance, the Galaxy Alpha focuses on both beauty and functionality combining a stunning metal frame and slim, light weight design with the same powerful hardware and features users expect from a flagship Galaxy mobile device.”

In its last quarterly financial report, Samsung saw profits take a 20% year-on-year drop, which the firm blamed on “slow global sales of smartphones”.

With the bulk of its smartphone products made from plastic, designing a new product with a “premium” feel will be viewed as Samsung trying to up its game against rivals.

No price has yet been set for the device.
