Setanta Sports is to offer a subscription channel on Freeview, meaning that any home with a set top box will be able to receive the channel for a monthly fee.
Viewers will be able to take the channel on a stand-alone basis and not have to pay for a package deal, as is the case with Sky Sports subscribers.
Furthermore, it will not be necessary for viewers to subscribe to Top Up TV’s pay-TV package in order to receive Setanta.
In May, Setanta ended Sky’s monopoly on Premier League football when it won the rights to show 46 matches a season (see Sky And Setanta Share Remaining Premiership Rights).
Setanta have said that its aim is to substantially reduce the price viewers have to pay to watch live football.
A recent report from media watchdog Ofcom revealed that digital television has reached over 70% of households in the UK (see Digital TV In 70% Of Homes).
