BskyB has appointed BBC 1’s former head of planning, Adam MacDonald, to run Sky 1.

A+E Networks vice president MacDonald will replace current director Stuart Murphy, and head its Sky 1 and Sky 2 channels.

The role was initially offered to Liam Keelan of the BBC, but was turned down last minute, with Keelan joining BBC Worldwide instead.

Despite being “disappointed” by Keelan’s refusal, Murphy said: “Adam is an ideal appointment – not only has he already run History to great success, but he shares our values of excellence and fun.”

MacDonald said: “I have totally loved my time at A+E Networks UK and we have made huge strides forward with our portfolio of channels, both in the UK and internationally.

“I’ll miss the team greatly – but they are incredibly well equipped to continue the impressive progress the company is making.”

He added: “It will be an honour to be working with them and together taking Sky1 to even greater heights.”

MacDonald has previously worked as chief for ITV and Channel 4, head of planning for the BBC and creative director at IWC Media.
