Sky COO: “We have gone from being ahead to being behind consumers”

Sky has fallen behind consumer demand, according to BSkyB’s chief operating office Mike Darcey.

Darcey admitted that for the first time in his time at Sky – he joined the company in 1998 – the pay-TV operator is struggling to keep up with consumer demand because they expect content to be available all the time on whatever platform is convenient to them.

Speaking at an event in London yesterday Darcey said he always thought of Sky as being the innovator, bringing things to market like Sky+, “but today customer expectations of what they should be able to do with their content have caught up and run ahead of us and as an industry we are trying to catch up”.

Darcey explained that at the moment consumers are asking questions that Sky cannot answer. “There are a lot of technology and rights issues to get right,” he said.
