Sony USA is currently producing 750,000 Blu-ray DVDs every month, with production expected to rise to over five million discs per month by October of this year.
Six of the additional lines will be able to produce 50GB dual layer Blu-ray discs.
The Blu-ray format has a capacity five time larger than DVD, and the players will be fully backward compatible with current CDs and DVDs, as well as being able to deliver content in high definition (see Programme Makers Look To HDTV).
Dieter Daum, president of Sony Disc and Digital Solutions, said: “Blu-ray is going to revolutionise the way consumers enjoy and interact with high definition entertainment content, and we are pleases to play a critical role in this important development.”
