Spanish Viewers To Get New DTV Services

Two of Spain’s largest cable operators have announced plans to roll out digital TV services this year, according to a report on Europemedia.

ONO and Auna Cable had been expected to launch operations in late-2002 but the uncertain state of the DTV market led to a delay. Both services will carry up to 100 channels through their networks which can also deliver telephony and internet services.

It had been rumoured that the two operators were contemplating a merger which would result in the creation of a cable company with a potential market of 4 million homes. The Spanish government has already approved the merger of two satellite platforms, Canal Satellite Digital and Via Digital (see Spanish Pay-TV Groups Given Merger Go-Ahead).
