SUBtv To Sponsor National Student Music Awards

Student union television specialists, SUBtv is sponsoring the National Student Music Awards, and has signed up online music site, Wippit, as its digital download partner, which will be used for online voting and promotions.

SUBtv is sponsoring and organising the event and will be providing facilities for filming and recording the bands. Thirty finalists have already been selected from demos previously submitted and their performances will be filmed and played on the SUBtv screen network in 67 universities across the country over the next three months. Students will be able to watch bands on the SUBtv or see them live at ten regional heats and then vote for their favourites via email, SMS or online through Wippit.

Wippit will benefit from the deal from pre-promotion on SUBtv, exposure at recording sessions and local heats, and further involvement in the national final and post-event recording.

The grand final, featuring the three highest scoring bands, will take place on May 11 at University of London Union and as well as a winner, there will also be a people’s champion chosen by the audience.

As part of their prize, the winning band will receive; studio and producer time at Abbey Road Studios to produce an EP, a recording session at Maida Vale Studios, recorded tracks made available for download online on Wippit, an appearance on ITV’s CD:UK, an appearance at the Rugby World 7’s tournament in June and advice how to secure a deal with a record label.

Commenting on the partnership Jason Barrett of SUBtv said: “We are a lead medium on campus and as such believe that we should be encouraging grass roots participation in live music among the national student populace through events, promotions and programming.”

Earlier this month SUBtv announced a deal to give advertisers the chance to access 24% of UK 18-24 year olds with six broadcast sponsorship packages for 2005’s 6 Nations rugby championship. Each package, comprising of live matches and rugby programming, will be broadcast in 77 student unions and allow participating advertisers 25% of the screen space to display their messages, allowing each sponsor 16 minutes exposure per match (see Advertisters Target Students During Six Nations).
