Point Topic, the providers of broadband speed maps and forecasts, has released the quarterly round-up report for the final quarter of 2012, revealing that 15% of Britain’s broadband users are subscribers of high-speed.
At the end of 2012, an estimated 3.36 million superfast broadband lines were in use, with BT Retail and Virgin media totalling almost 3.23 million superfast subscribers between them.
DSL (digital subscriber line) numbers were down by almost 18,000. The DSL figures have remained static since the second quarterly results, and Point Topic expects that this marks a downhill course for DSL.
The rise in superfast broadband in the UK is positive news for the Government, who published a report in 2010 outlining the ambition for Britain to have the best superfast broadband network in Europe by 2015.
Britain currently has the third fastest superfast broadband coverage in Europe – reaching 55% – 65% of UK households – behind Spain and Germany.
