Tablet to enter market for under £30

A budget tablet is set to enter the market for just £29, available to buy online in the UK by the end of the year.

Speaking at Wired 2013 in London, Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of Datawind, who designed the model, said that the tablet has been developed due to lack of adoption in the developing world of the technology – a result of high costs, rather than internet availability.

The news coincides with Argos’ launch of a low-budget tablet, which has hit the shelves for £100 – undercutting Tesco’s newly-launched Hudl by £20.

In order to make the device affordable, Tuli explained that Datawind had to create a business model that would allow the tablet to sell for the same price as the hardware – which it did through a mixture of content and advertising.

As well as being a low-cost product, the tablet will also offer free basic browsing.

“It’s not just about creating low-cost devices,” Tuli said, “it’s about delivering the internet.”
