Telegraph.co.uk Most Visited National Newspaper Site In April

Man Online Telegraph.co.uk was the most visited national newspaper website in April. According to figures released by ABCe, the Telegraph Media site has continued its impressive rise in traffic, beating all other audited newspaper sites.

Traffic for the website has been rising steadily in the last few months, from 10.5 million unique users in December to 18.6 in April.

This puts Guardian.co.uk in second place for the first time. The website figures remain extremely healthy but its fall of over one million users since January, to 18.5 million, was enough to knock it off the number one spot, a position it has held since ABCe began auditing the nationals’ digital output.

Dailymail.co.uk saw a slight rise to 18 million users, but fell to third place, while Times Online remained stagnant in April with a loss of half a million browsers. The News International site has been witnessing growth since the beginning of the year, gaining 4.2 million people since January.

Remaining fifth on the list was Sun Online with 14 million unique users. The traffic has been fairly steady for the tabloid website and has gained 6 million users since April 2007. But the Sun continues to shine when its page impressions are considered, weighing in far above its competitors with an astounding 256 million page impressions over the thirty days of April. Its opponents’ page impressions were lagging behind somewhat with Guardian.co.uk the closest at 182 million.

Since its first ABCe audit in March (see Telegraph.co.uk Most Visited National Newspaper Site In April), the Mirror Group’s audience fell by 126 thousand unique users, leaving the website with the lowest traffic of the six websites. Mirror Group does not audit page impressions.

The Telegraph’s dramatic rise over the last few months has raised a few eyebrows in the industry. The Joint Industry Committee for Web Standards, which advises ACBe on how it collects data, has agreed to review the ways in which this data is measured after rival newspapers recently voiced concern over the matter.

*ABCe defines Unique User as “The total number of unique combinations of a valid identifier, Sites may use (i)IP+UserAgent, (ii) Cookie and/or (iii) Registration ID.” Note that where USERS are allocated IP addresses dynamically (for example by dial-up Internet Service Providers), this definition may overstate or understate the real number of individual USERS concerned.
