Television Viewing Round-Up – April 2009

People Watching TV TV viewing data for April shows that ITV1’s share was down year on year, with the other main terrestrial broadcasters also seeing falls.


All Viewing

ITV1’s viewing share was down 1.4 percentage points year on year, from 18.9% in April 2008 to 17.5% in April 2009.

The channel did have some strong performing shows during the month though, with Champions League football proving a big draw (see ITV’s football coverage triumphs with over 9.5m viewers alongside Saturday night ratings titan Britain’s Got Talent (see Britain’s Got Talent performs well).

BBC One saw its share dip 0.6 percentage points year on year, to 21.1%, although it was bolstered by the return of time-swap cop show Ashes to Ashes (see Ashes to Ashes returns with 7m viewers) and the continued success of The Apprentice (see The Apprentice secures the highest ratings).

Sister channel BBC Two was also down by 0.6 percentage points, to leave its April viewing share at 6.9%.

Channels 4 and Five were down by 0.2 percentage points and 0.3 percentage points respectively, leaving Channel 4 with a 7.4% share and Five with 5%.

Other channels saw a rise in viewing share of 2.7 percentage points, hitting 41.4%.


Digital Viewing

ITV1 was down 1.3 percentage points in digital homes, leaving its viewing share at 16.5%, while BBC One dipped 0.3 percentage points to 19.9%.

BBC Two dropped 0.5 percentage points to 6.1% while Channel 4 remained relatively static, dipping 0.1 percentage points to 6.7%.

Five’s viewing share in digital homes now stands at 4.8% following a fall of 0.2 percentage points in April.

Other channels in digital homes saw their viewing share increase by 1.9 percentage points year on year, to 45.1%.
