Television Viewing Round-Up – February 2009

People Watching TV Four of the main five terrestrial channels suffered dips in viewing share in February, with BBC Two managing a slight year on year rise of 0.1 percentage point.

BBC One’s viewing share has fallen to 21.8% following a year on year fall of 0.6 percentage points, while ITV1’s has dropped to 18.7% after a fall of 0.3 percentage points.

Last month saw the return of BBC One drama Mistresses, which attracted a peak of over 4.9 million viewers at the start of its new series (see New Mistresses attracts almost 5 million peak viewers).

Channel 4 was also down 0.6 percentage points in February, leaving its viewing share at 7.3%. The channel’s Grand Designs series had a notable triumph last month, however, beating ITV1’s FA Cup coverage in the ratings war (see Grand Designs comes up trumps).

Five was down 1.8 percentage points year on year, to 4.9%, although its popular drama import CSI: Crime Scene Investigation continued to pull in viewers (see CSI pushes Five up in the ratings).

Other channels were up by 1.8 percentage points to 39.5% in February.


Digital Viewing

Looking at viewing share in digital homes, BBC Two managed a 0.3 percentage point increase, to 7%, while ITV1 remained static at 17.8%.

BBC One was down 0.4 percentage points to 20%, while Channel 4 and Five were down 0.3 and 0.5 percentage points respectively.

Other channels saw their viewing share increase by 0.8 percentage points in digital homes, to 43%
