TV viewing figures for September 2009 reveal that Channel 4’s viewing share was down by one percentage point year on year.

ITV1, BBC2 and Five also saw their viewing shares decrease slightly on September 2008’s figures.

BBC1, meanwhile, remained static year on year.

Channel 4’s viewing share was down 1.0 percentage point in September, leaving its total at 6.5%.

ITV1’s viewing share dipped 0.3 percentage points year on year to a total of 18%, although coverage of England’s World Cup qualifier against Croatia performed well for the commercial broadcaster.

At the end of the month, the premiere of new US drama FlashForward grabbed a peak of more than 3.4 million viewers for Five, although the station was down 0.5 percentage points year on year for the month as a whole, to 4.6%.

Looking at the BBC channels, BBC Two’s viewing share fell 0.3% year on year to 7.3%, while BBC One’s viewing share was static at 20.8%.

Other channels were up 2.1 percentage points year on year to 42.1%.

Digital Viewing

In digital homes, Channel 4 suffered a 0.7 percentage point fall in its viewing share, while Five was also down, by 0.3 percentage points to 4.5%.

ITV1 and BBC One both enjoyed increases in share in digital homes, up by 0.2 and 0.7 percentage points respectively. ITV1 now has a 17.2% viewing share, while BBC One’s stands at 19.9%.

BBC Two’s viewing share remained static at 6.7%, as did other channels, at 44.8%.
