Telewest Nets Half A Million Broadband Users

Telewest Broadband has announced a milestone 500,000th broadband customer and has marked the achievement with with a year’s free connection for its lucky half-millionth customer.

Chad Raube, director of internet services at the company, said: “The half a million milestone has been achieved by combining quality, value and innovative service development, typified by the increases in speed we have now rolled out to our blueyonder customers across the country.”

Telewest is currently seen as something of an underdog in Britain’s broadband market, with its performance consistently dwarfed by rivals NTL and BT. Earlier this year NTL announced it had become the first internet service provider in Britain to have over one million customers connected to its broadband network (see NTL Announces One Million UK Broadband Homes).

Elsewhere BT has introduced trials to extend the range of its broadband network, claiming that, if successful, the trial could allow up to one million extra customers in remote areas to have access to high-speed internet using existing technology (see BT To Boost Broadband Up-Take With Long Distance Trial).

Earlier this month it was revealed that Britain’s high levels of broadband availability will secure it the top spot in the league of broadband-enabled G7 nations by the end of the year. Research showed that, while Britain currently lags far behind other developed countries such as Japan in terms of ultra-high-speed access, its broadband availability will ensure the country scores highly, thanks to rapid take-up in recent months (see Britain On Track To Lead Broadband Nations).
