Telewest Offers Budget Broadband To Dialup Die Hards

Telewest has launched a cut-price broadband package to entice its last remaining dial-up customers to switch to high-speed connections, with broadband pricing to match that of its dial-up offering.

The new package gives customers little choice but to upgrade their connection, offering Telewest’s 256k blueyonder internet service for £14.99 per month, the same price as unlimited dial-up services from Tiscali and Wanadoo and cheaper than dial-up from AOL and BT.

The new package, available from Monday, indicated a concerted effort by the cable company to tip consumers considering switching to broadband over the edge of a deal. Telewest claims the decision is a ‘no-brainer’ for consumers, with Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer at the company stating: “It’s never been easier to switch to broadband – and now the price is right for hesitant dial-up users to test the broadband water.”

He added: “There are now no reasons not to take broadband – the price is the same as dial-up but there are none of the frustrations and the advantages are obvious – faster speeds, an always on connection and you can use the phone and the internet at the same time.”

Cut-price broadband packages are now commonplace. Telecoms giant BT recently announced a drop in price for its entry-level broadband service to £17.99 per month, bringing its tariffs into line with competitors (see BT Slashes Broadband Price To Compete In Budget Market). However, Telewest’s latest price cuts make it amongst the cheapest options for users wishing to get online.

Elsewhere, technophobes are being targeted by a new industry body appointed by the Government to drive the uptake of new technology, including broadband and digital television, after research revealed the existence of a hardcore of refuseniks that refuse to embrace new technologies (see Digital Refuseniks Targeted By New Uptake Push).
