Tesco to enter tablet market

Tesco has announced that it will be entering the ‘low-cost’ Android tablet market with the launch of Hudl.

The new seven inch tablet device is set to hit the shelves at £119 at the end of this month, with 16GB of storage, front and rear facing cameras and WiFi.

Tesco’s decision to launch the device stems from Ofcom’s claim that three quarters of UK households do not have a tablet, alongside Tesco’s own research which found that many feel that the technology is ‘too expensive’ or ‘intimidating’.

The Hudl runs Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 and runs all standard Google Play apps and games.

Compared with other competitors already in the tablet market, Hudl’s screen resolution is much lower, however the device also costs much less – Google’s Nexus costs double the price that Tesco is asking for.

Tesco’s chief executive Philip Clarke said that this is only the first stage in Tesco’s tablet offering.
