The rise of second screening has been captured in a new infographic, which shows the ever-increasing integration of smartphones and tablets into living rooms across the globe.

Drawing on various research papers, the infographic from Graphica shows that 63% of the Middle Eastern and African population that own a smartphone access social media on their devices whilst watching television, with South America and North America not so far behind, with 52% and 40%, respectively.

It also shows how 51% of people use their smartphones to look up information about the programme that they’re watching, with 35% connecting to others that might also be watching, and 25% browsing the web to check for vouchers and deals that they saw advertised on TV.

In just one year, the average amount of time that Americans spend on phones has almost doubled, increasing from 81.8 billion minutes to a massive 157.5 billion minutes.

However, it’s not just mobile use that’s high in America. 99% of all American households have a TV set, with 65% having three or more.

This year’s Super Bowl, watched by 108.4 million of the US population, more than 47.7 million people sent comments to social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, up 180.58% YoY.
