Ticket Purchases Via Mobile Phones To Boost M-Commerce

Purchasing tickets using a mobile telephone is set to be one of the new drivers in the global mobile commerce market, which is estimated to turn in to an $88 billion industry by 2009.

According to a new report from Juniper Research, ordering and paying for travel, cinema, theatre and car parking tickets via a mobile phone will be important factors in the development of this market which is set to generate $39 billion by 2009.

In Europe, the UK, Finland and Germany are expected to be key drivers in rolling out plans for mobile ticket ordering, with Finland leading the way in terms of innovation.

Already trials are under way in the UK to turn this in to a reality. In a recent test, mobile phone solutions group, Mobiqa, sent a ‘mobi-ticket’ which is bar coded message to the mobile phones of particular car park users. The mobi-ticket was then redeemed at the car park entrance by simply scanning the mobile phone display against a standard scanner.

Report author, Marc Ambasna-Jones said: “Mobile ticketing has the potential to be a huge application. The very nature of buying and selling tickets is high volume and low cost. This will make it easier for consumers to try it at least once because it is low risk.”

Although set to become a major player in mobile commerce market, ticketing will still be dominated by mobile entertainment such as ringtones, games and wallpaper which will continue as the largest sector in this industry generating $48 billion by 2009.
