Times Targets Women With Online Expansion

The Times has launched a new section of its website to cater for female readers, offering the best in features, fashion and style from the newspaper, as well as specially commissioned material, in a bid to strengthen its readership amongst women.

Times Online Women will pull together the best articles from The Times and The Sunday Times in addition to offering content exclusive to the website.

The new section will feature topics from health and beauty, from The Sunday Times Style magazine, fashion features from The Times T2, and business, money, travel and motoring content. The online delivery of the section also allows for expanded picture galleries with most sections.

The section’s launch content includes an interview with Kylie Minogue taken from Sunday Times Style magazine, while web-only content and columns such as Single in the City, written by a Times Online correspondent, give the section fresh and fun appeal.

Commenting on the new section’s creation Peter Bale, online editorial director of The Times and The Sunday Times said: “We have a large number of female visitors and we hope this new section will allow us to build a community of readers who find it a rich source of entertainment and information.”

He added: “The section goes beyond the traditional fashion formula to offer women a genuine range of articles from personal finance to education and, of course, fashion from outstanding writers such as Anne Ashworth, Lisa Armstrong, and Lucia van der Post. The women’s section will be a powerhouse of essential information.

Times Online has seen rapid expansion over the past few months, embarking on a review and revamping of its services and overhauling several of its sections (see Times Continues Online Revamp Strategy With Driving Overhaul).

The online division recently opened its site to oversees readers, allowing free access to certain areas of its website in an attempt to provide advertisers with access to UK consumers abroad. Much of the Times Online website, such as the driving, travel and business sections, was already open to oversees readers, but they now also have free access to the homepage, world news, comment and feature sections (see Times Online Opens Up To Overseas Readers).
