Top Up TV Confirms Appointment Of Freeview Manager

Subscription-based digital terrestrial service Top Up TV has announced the appointment of Matt Seaman as the company’s sales and marketing director following his defection from Freeview in February.

Seaman joins the embryonic television firm after three months of compulsory gardening leave from his previous role as Freeview general manager. Top Up is now certain to use his experience to boost its subscriber numbers as the company chases its target of of 250,000 subscriptions within two years.

Commenting on the appointment Ian West, Top Up TV’s deputy chairman and CEO, said: “We are very pleased that Top Up TV has managed to attract someone of Matt’s quality and experience. Matt’s experience at Freeview will help bring to Top Up an in-depth understanding of DTT customers, and his marketing experience will be critical to Top Up TV’s growth going forward.”

Last month research from ZenithOptimedia claimed that consumers are reluctant to upgrade from analogue to digital television. However, the BBC have given encouraging forecasts in a recent submission to the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (see Consumers Reluctant To Upgrade To Digital Television).

The Corporation claims that Top Up TV will be purchased by 15% of Freeview customers by 2010. Informa Media Group expects that around 17 million people will have Freeview by the end of the decade, putting Top Up’s audience at around 2.5 million, which is well ahead of its break-even target of 250,000 subscribers.

Top Up TV launched last month and has yet to announce viewing or subscriber numbers for its channels. The service offers customers a range of premium entertainment channels through ex-Ondigital or ITV Digital boxes for £7.99 a month, plus a connection fee of £20 (see Top Up TV Confirms End Of March Launch Date).
