TV Market Round-Up – December 2001
Revenue
Year on year analysis shows that TV revenue across all terrestrial and non-terrestrial commercial channels fell by 6.5% year on year during December 2001. Channel 5 and GMTV were the worst affected with revenues dropping 16.9% and 9.8% respectively in an analysis against the same period in 2000. ITV1 saw the least significant year on year fall with revenue dropping 5.2% in December. Satellite proved that it is not immune to the slump with revenue slipping 12.9% year on year during December.

Among the ITV franchises LWT saw the most significant year on year drop in revenue, sliding 0.52 percentage points during December. Central was close behind with a drop of 0.50 percentage points year on year. At the other end of the scale Meridian and HTV saw revenue increase year on year during December, the former by 0.84 percentage points and the latter by 0.27 percentage points. Central and Carlton continued to dominate in terms of revenue share, with a respective 16.03% and 14.34% share of the total revenue.

Costs Per Thousand
ITV1 and Channel 4 saw costs per thousand rise across the board year on year during December. Both saw significant increases in the Housewives with Children category, with ITV1 experiencing a year on year rise of 17.2% and Channel 5 an increase of 11.5% in that category during December. Channel 5 saw costs per thousand fall across all categories. The most notable drop was in the ABC1 Adults category, which was down 30.5% year on year during December, followed by the Women category, which slipped 26.7%.

Commercial Impacts
ITV1 and Channel 4 saw commercial impacts fall significantly year on year during December, with all categories dropping between 10% and 20%. The heaviest falls for both broadcasters was in the Housewives with Children category, which was down 19.10% at ITV1 and 16% at Channel 4. Channel 5 saw commercial impacts increase across all categories year on year during December, with the ABC1 Adults category rising by 19.6%. Satellite also saw commercial impacts increase year on year across all categories, with the Adults and Men categories rising by 18.2% and 18.7% respectively during December.
