TV Market Round-Up – January 2008
January saw across the board declines for all the terrestrial channels, with Channel 4 and Five jointly recording the biggest year on year dips.
Both stations fell by 6.6% compared to January 2007, to stand at £ 48.59 million and £ 19.34 million respectively. ITV1 had the next biggest year on year fall, down by 2% to rest at £108.66 million.
Five had a relatively good month revenue-wise, only slipping by 0.2% year, to stand at £ 4.38 million for this month.
Total Satellite saw its revenue total increase by 22.3% year on year, to stand at £85.73 million.

ITV Franchises
According to our agency estimates both Carlton and Central achieved the greatest share of ITV1 revenue, with the London weekday and Midland franchise areas jointly achieving a 16.16% share of the network’s revenue.
The Wales & West franchise area HTV, which went from 6% in January 2007 to 6.53% this year, saw the best year on year increase in share.
West Country maintains its position as ITV1’s smallest provider of revenue, remaining at 2.02% for January 2008.

Costs Per Thousand
ITV1’s cost per thousands price fell across all but one of our featured audiences. Only Housewives with children were more expensive to reach compared to January 2007, increasing by 0.5%
Channel 4 reported across the board increases for our featured audiences, with Housewives with children having the greatest increase (up 18.9% to cost £18.9)
Five was also dearer to reach across all audiences, with Men rising the most year on year (up 5.2% to cost £9.53).

Commercial Impacts
ITV1 only saw the Housewives audience improve year on year for featured commercial impact audiences, up 0.4% on January 2007. The biggest fall for the channel was seen amongst Housewives with children, 2.4% less than twelve months ago.
With the exception of the Men audience, Channel 4 saw double digit year on year decreases in commercial impacts. The greatest slump was in the Housewives with children audience, 21.5% lower than last year’s figure.
Five commercial impacts decreased across all featured audiences, with ABC1 Adults dropping the most (down 21.1% year on year).
Total Broadcast recorded year on year rises for nearly all featured audiences, the lone exception being Housewives with children (slipping 1.3% on January 2007).
