TV Market Round-Up – June 2000

Revenue Agency estimates put year on year growth in terrestrial television revenue (including GMTV) at 19.6%, with the total now at £245 million. This comprised ITV revenue’s 20% rise, Channel 4’s growth of 15.3%, Channel 5’s revenue rise of 33.8% and GMTV’s 7.5% year on year increase.

Total satellite revenue increased by 12.5% year on year.

Carlton enjoyed the largest share of revenue during June, with 17%. It was also one of the few franchises to see a year-on-year rise, putting on 3 percentage points. Meridian and West Country were the only other regions to see rises, each adding 0.1 percentage points. Meridian took an 11.8% share of revenue, behind LWT’s 12.2% and Central’s 16.3%.

Commercial Impacts Channel 5 had a good month in terms of commercial impacts, with increases across all categories except ABC1s which fell 1.1%. Housewives (14.3%) and Housewives with children (16.4%) showed the biggest improvements. Satellite saw the largest increases overall, with Housewives with children rising 32.8% and ABC1s up 29.8%. ITV saw losses in all categories ranging from -0.1% (ABC1s) to 9.5% (Housewives with children). The exception was Men, which rose 2.7%.

Costs Per Thousand Once again the largest increases in costs per thousand were found on the ITV network. Housewives with children saw a year-on-year rise of 32.6%, Women rose 28.8% and Housewives rose 27.2%. Channels 4 and 5 both saw increases in costs per thousand across the board. Channel 4’s biggest jump was in Housewives with children, which went up 17.2%. Channel 5 saw its largest rise in ABC1 Adults, up 35.2%.
