TV Market Round-Up June 2002

Analysis of June’s TV revenue figures for the UK’s main terrestrial channels reveals an overall 9.3% year on year improvement in revenue. The exception was GMTV, which saw a 11.9% year on year decline. Channel 5 saw the most significant year on year increase and revenue was seen rising 12.1% in June. ITV was not far behind, with an 11.3% year on year increase, while Channel 4 lagged behind with a 5.1% increase.

Among the ITV franchises, LWT saw the most significant loss in revenue share, dropping 0.85 percentage points year on year. At the other end of the scale, Meridian saw the most significnat upward movement, adding 0.77 percentage points to its share of ITV’s revenue. Central and Carlton continued to take the largest share of revenue, with a respective 16% and 15%.

Costs Per Thousand

Costs per thousand rose across the board for ITV1 during June 2002, with the most notable increase in the Housewives with Children category, which rose by 34.5% year on year, this was followed by the Women category, which increased by 25.8%. Channel 5 also saw a significant increase in its ABC1 Adults category, which was up 10.3% year on year during June. The channel experienced at 15% year on year decline in its Women category.

Commercial Impacts

Commercial impacts were down year on year across the board for ITV1, which saw its Housewives with Children category fall 17.9% and its Women category slip 10.9% during June 2002. However, commercial impacts were up across all categories for the other terrestrial and satellite channels. The most notable increase was seen at Channel 4, with its Housewives with Children category rising by 36.6% year on year, followed by Satellite, which experienced a 30.3% rise in the Women category.
