TV Market Round-Up – November 2001

Revenue

Fears of falling TV revenues are confirmed in the figures for November 2001, with revenue across all terrestrial and non-terrestrial commercial channels falling 11.2% year on year. Worst affected were ITV1, which dropped 12.9% in an analysis against the same period last year, and Channel 5, which fell 12.6%. Even Satellite, which, due to its rapid growth, usually shows a year on year increase in revenue, was not immune to the slump, and slipped 3.3%.

Revenue share among the ITV franchises saw some movement year on year. LWT saw its share fall 2 percentage points, while Central dropped 1 percentage points, but retained the largest share. Behind Central came Carlton, which also dropped almost a whole percentage point year on year.

Costs Per Thousand

The Housewives with Children category continues to have the highest CPT across the terrestrial channels, by some margin. During November, CPTs at ITV1 rose in all categories, including a 6.6% year on year increase for ABC1 Adults. The opposite was true of both Channel 4 and Channel 5, where CPTs decreased year on year across the board, including a 5.3% decrease for Men at Channel 4 and a 28.6% decrease for Housewives with Children at Channel 5.

Commercial Impacts

ITV1 saw heavy falls in commercial impacts year on year during November, with all categories dropping between 16 and 18%. Channel 4 also saw nothing but decreases, including a 4.7% drop in Housewives with Children. Channel 5 mainly saw increases, including a 22.4% increase in Housewives with Children, while large increases were witnessed across all categories for satellite, including a 25.9% increase in the Women category.
