TV Market Round-Up – October 2007

TV Remote Control October was a mixed month for the terrestrial channels, with only Five and GMTV increasing their respective year on year revenue totals. Five saw its revenue increase by 2.8% on October 2006 to £28.3 million, while beleaguered breakfast station GMTV posted the best performance of any station (up 20.1% to stand at £6.2 million).

The recent turnaround in ITV1 network revenue has been checked somewhat, with figures for October down year on year by 5.1%, to stand at a total of £132.4 million. Channel 4 also slipped from £63.5 million last October to stand at £62.8 million this year, a 1.1% year on year decrease.

Satellite narrowly misses out on breaking the £100 million barrier, but it’s looking odds on to succeed in the coming months. During October estimated revenue for all multichannel stations was £99.4 million, up by 9% year on year.

ITV Franchises

The best year on year performance within ITV franchise areas came from Meridian. The South, South East, and Channel Islands station, which improved its take of network revenue by 0.33 percentage points, standing at 12.05%.

Despite a 0.48 percentage point year on year fall in share total, Central kept the mantle of the largest share provide of ITV1 revenue. For the month of October, the Midlands franchise area had a 16.13% share of the network’s revenue.

West Country is the only franchise area to remain unchanged on the previous year’s share, remaining at 2.03% for October.

Costs Per Thousand

Across our featured CPT audiences only Housewives with Children became more expensive to reach on ITV1, up 2.8% to £54.85. The audience that saw its price decrease most was Men, slipping by 11.8% year on year to cost £18.65 per thousand for October 2007.

Just like last month, all featured audiences for Channel 4 were more expensive year on year. This month Men recorded the biggest increase, rising 6.2% on October 2006.

Five also had across the board price increases, with all featured audiences once again at least 10% more expensive than October 2006. ABC1 Adults attained the greatest price increase, up 21.7% year on year for the month.

Commercial Impacts

Inverse to the CPT prices falling for ITV1, commercial impacts increased for all our featured audiences except Housewives with Children (down 7.7% year on year). The biggest increase was recorded amongst ABC1 Adults, rising 6.9% on October 2006.

Channel 4 saw all audiences decreasing year on year for October. The greatest fall of commercial impacts could be seen by Men, which dipped by 6.8%.

Five saw falls across featured audiences, with ABC1 Adults dropping the most, by 15.5% year on year.

All but one of Total Broadcast’s featured audiences rose year on year, with ABC1 Adults achieving the biggest gain, up 3.5%.
