Election day fever translated into big viewing figures for BBC One’s coverage last night.

The channel’s Election Night 2010 picked up a peak of 5.8 million viewers (a 29.4% share of the audience) between 10pm and midnight.

Over on Channel 4, the Alternative Election Night peaked at 2.6 million viewers (11.6%) between 10pm and midnight.

ITV1’s coverage did not do so well, with a peak of 2.3 million viewers (9.9%) between 10pm and midnight.

Earlier in the evening, the 9pm to 10pm hour was won by BBC One, with an average of 3.8 million (6.6%) tuning into brainbox quiz show QI, while at 9.30pm, Outnumbered pulled in 4.7 million viewers (20%).
