BBC One’s Olympic coverage continues to dominate the TV ratings, with almost 11 million peak viewers tuning in to the action between 8.30pm and 9pm last night.
In what was another exciting day for London 2012, BBC One’s ratings averaged three million in the morning and five million during the afternoon sessions.
Audiences peaked at 10.9 million in the 7pm to 10pm slot during the men and women’s 400m hurdles finals. BBC One’s evening coverage attracted an average audience of 9.3 million viewers and a 37.3% audience share.
ITV’s alternative schedule featured its usual Monday night soap line-up – one episode of Emmerdale and two episodes of Coronation Street – as well as a new documentary charting the success of Mike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman.
Coronation Street peaked with 6.6 million viewers on ITV1 and an extra 461,000 on ITV1 HD. Emmerdale secured over 5.4 million peak viewers on ITV1, while The Hit Factory: The Stock, Aitken & Waterman Story banked 2.3 million viewers at 9pm.
BBC One’s Olympic dominance has had an impact on ITV ratings, as expected. ITV1 was beaten for the first time (in terms of all-day audience share) by BBC3 on Saturday and Sunday.
ITV1 recorded its lowest daily audience share – 4.8% between 6am on Sunday and 2am on Monday, marginally increasing to 5% when ITV1 +1 is included – since new Barb methodology was introduced in 2002.
Olympic fans have also been watching online. Bradley Wiggin’s victory in the men’s cycling was the most-watched Olympics video on the BBC Sport website in the first week of the Games, racking up 729,000 views. The Opening Ceremony has been viewed more than 3.4 million times across the BBC Sports site and iPlayer.
Usain Bolt’s 100m final win is expected to be the most-watched Olympic video, followed by the ‘Super Saturday’ evening when Team GB won three gold medals. The 100m final attracted 19 million viewers to BBC One on Sunday night, while Saturday night’s coverage peaked with 15.3 million viewers as Mo Farah claimed victory in the men’s 10,000m race.
