TV Overnights: Formula 1 and Top Gear race into top positions

The weekend daytime saw BBC One’s Formula 1 coverage secure top ratings from 12pm until 3.15pm on Sunday afternoon, with an average viewing figure of 4.1 million, and an average share of 38.4%.

Saturday’s coverage, from 12.15pm until 2.15pm, also achieved the highest daytime ratings, with an average of 2.6 million viewing, and 32.5% share.

Over the weekend, BBC One’s Formula 1 coverage peaked at 5.2 million viewing, and a 44.9% share.

On Sunday evening, BBC One’s Sherlock took the peak slot of 9pm to 10pm, with an average viewing figure of 7 million, and a 28.5% share.

ITV1’s Taggart achieved an average of 3.7 million viewers and a 14.5% average share during the same slot; down on last week’s 4.9 million and 21% average share.

Over on BBC Two, Coast managed an average viewing figure of 3.2 million, and a 12.4% average share for the 9pm to 10pm slot.

Shortly before on BBC Two, Top Gear secured top position for the 8pm to 9 pm slot, averaging 5.8 million viewers, and with a 22.3% share.

On Saturday evening, BBC One held the peak slot of 9pm to 10pm once again, with Casualty. The hospital drama achieved an average of 5.3 million viewers, and a 24.6% share. This was up on last week’s figures of 4.8 million, and a 22.9% share.

Over on ITV1, 30 Years of an Audience With managed an average viewing figure of 3.4 million, and an average share of 15.8%.

Meanwhile, the soaps dominated the Friday evening television schedule. ITV1’s Emmerdale, airing at 7pm, achieved 5.9 million viewers and a share of 34%. The first episode of Coronation Street followed, with 6.9 million viewers and a 37.6% share.

BBC One then took over with Eastenders at 8pm, achieving an average of 7.4 million viewers, and a 36.8% share.

The second part of ITV1’s Coronation Street, at 8.30pm, secured a 6.5 million average viewing figure, and an average share of 30.7%.

Channel 4 and Five achieved no top ratings over the weekend, although Channel 4’s Deal or No Deal once again won its slot on Friday afternoon. Airing at 4.10pm, the 50 minute game show secured an average viewing of 1.5 million, and a 17.1% share.
