TV Overnights: ITV1’s new Strangeways banks the top spot

ITV1’s new three-part documentary series Strangeways secured the all-important peak-hour ratings last night with a high of 5.6 million viewers.

The new programme, which follows the day to day life at HM Prison Manchester, achieved an average audience of more than 5.2 million viewers and a 21.7% share during the 9pm to 10pm slot ahead of BBC One’s new documentary.

Wootton Bassett: The Town that Remembers – the story behind the town in Swindon where tributes to soldiers have earned the community a royal title – attracted 2.8 million average viewers and a 11.8% share for BBC One.

Channel 5’s The Hotel Inspector with Alex Polizzi came next in line with 1.6 million average viewers and a 7% share, followed by BBC Two’s second Children’s Craniofacial Surgery, which pulled in 1.4 million viewers and a 6% share.

On Channel 4, the first of Gordon’s Great Escape, which saw chef Gordon Ramsay embark on yet another culinary quest – this time in Cambodia, secured a low 992,000 viewers and a 4.1% share.

The soaps dominated the pre-watershed ratings, as usual – with BBC One’s Eastenders claiming the top spot of the night with a high of 8.9 million viewers. ITV1’s Emmerdale peaked with 7.1 million viewers, while Corrie banked 8.3 million.
