TV Overnights: X Factor wins 10.3m while Strictly peaks with 8.7m viewers

Saturday night’s X Factor peaked with an audience of 10.3 million viewers, securing the top ratings during the all important prime time slot.

The audition show continued with a 40% share of the Saturday night audience – a significant jump on Red or Black?‘s 19.5% share and 4.2 million average viewers in the slot before The X Factor.

The second and final Red or Black? pulled in a slightly higher 5.4 million viewers and 24.1% share to hold on to the peak ratings at 9pm.

On Sunday, the second hour-long episode of The X Factor attracted 9.8 million peak viewers and a 34.4% share between 8pm and 9pm.

ITV’s Rugby World Cup coverage also got off to a good start this weekend – the Argentina v England game pulled in almost four million peak viewers on Saturday morning; while the Wales v South Africa game secured 2.8 million viewers first thing on Sunday.

However, BBC One dominated the majority of the weekend ratings. On Saturday, the channel’s coverage of the Formula 1 and Walker Cup proved popular among viewers. And at 6.10pm, Strictly Come Dancing returned to our screens with more than 8.7 million peak viewers and a 37.3% audience share.

The Last Night of the Proms was also a hit, attracting over 5.6 million peak viewers and a 19.8% average share in the post-watershed slot.

The Italian Grand Prix banked a high of 5.5 million viewers and a 33.9% average audience share on Sunday, while Inspector George Gently secured the peak-hour ratings with 6.7 million peak viewers and a 24.8% share, beating ITV1’s final Appropriate Adult drama to the top spot.
