Twitter beats Facebook in teen popularity contest

Facebook seems to be following in the same footsteps as former Internet king MySpace as a new survey reveals that it is no longer the most popular social network among American teens.

A biannual survey by Piper Jaffray revealed that rival Twitter has replaced the long-standing social networking giant – founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg – as US teenagers’ favourite social platform.

In 2012, 42% of teens named Facebook as the social network most important to them, while just 27% said that it was Twitter. For the same period in 2013, Facebook’s popularity has fallen significantly to 23%, leaving Twitter to claim the top spot with 26%.

In retrospect, it is perhaps wise that Facebook decided to buy Instagram, as the popular photo and video sharing site currently shares the same value as Facebook (23%).

Earlier this year, media heavy-weight Rupert Murdoch took to Twitter to warn Facebook that it is headed in the same way as MySpace – almost a year to the day since Facebook’s underwhelming IPO.

Last week, Twitter announced that it is to enter the stock market , valued at $11 billion – the largest entry since Facebook’s in 2012.
