UBM Sells MegaStar Site To Sports.com

European internet and mobile sports data provider, Sports.com, has bought the Daily Star website, MegaStar, from United Business Media (UBM) for an undisclosed sum.

MegaStar has over half a million unique users and 14 million page views per month, according to Sports.com. Its audience is primarily UK-based 18-45 year old males.

MegaStar was launched in 1997 as an online spin-off of the Daily Star tabloid newspaper, itself part of the Express Newspapers Group which was recently sold by UBM to Northern & Shell (see Gossip And Girlie Publisher Takes On Express And Star). The MegaStar site was retained by UBM at that time.

Sports.com will take over the sale of advertising and sponsorship on the site as well as the production.

“The audience for Megastar is highly complementary to our 3 million visitors per month. This acquisition will lead to diversifying our revenue streams even further, which will enable us to move more rapidly towards profitability,” said Tom Jessiman, managing director of Sports.com.
