UK Companies Waste Thousands On Poor Marketing

UK companies are wasting thousands of pounds recruiting the wrong people for high-profile marketing roles they know nothing about, according to new research from a leading marketing recruitment consultancy.

A wide-ranging study conducted by Marketing Professionals UK has shown that a staggering 63% of British bosses admit they know next to nothing about the variety of modern marketing techniques used to promoted their businesses.

The findings come as the UK marketing industry prepares to embark on a period of growth following the worst downturn in living memory. The industry is planning on sales growth of more than 9% over the coming year as it bounces back after a prolonged period of negativity following the dotcom crash of late 2000 (see Recession In UK Marketing Finally Comes To An End).

Commenting on the report, Jonny Cainer at Marketing Professionals UK said: “Businesses are wasting a lot of money, time and effort on searching for marketers without fully understanding what their job role will be. The use of confusing jargon in the marketing industry compounds the problem as well as the vast array of job titles.”

He added: “Employers must work hard to create the right job specification and use a thorough recruitment process to find those with real talent and future potential. It is important that those recruiting have extensive experience of the UK marketing industry to avoid costly mistakes.”

The latest Bellwether report from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising shows confidence returning to the UK marketing sector in the final quarter of last year, with the steepest rise in marketing and advertising spend since the survey began more than four years ago (see Market Recovery Continuing For UK Advertisers).
