UK online audience hits 36.8m unique users in April

The UK (36.8 million unique visitors), and France (36.3 million unique visitors) had the second and third-largest online audiences in Europe in April, according to the latest data from comScore.

Of the 17 European countries individually tracked by comScore, Germany’s online audience was the continent’s largest, racking up 40 million unique visitors during the month.

At the same time as it issued European audience data for April, comScore also released its first report detailing the online behaviour of internet users in Turkey, which had the seventh largest online audience in Europe.

According to the report, more than 17 million people in Turkey ages 15+ accessed the internet from a home or work location, consuming an average 3,044 pages per visitor. These numbers also give Turkey the second-largest audience in Eastern Europe, behind Russia (31.3 million visitors).

Additionally, comScore said Turkey’s online population is the most engaged in Europe. On average, the Turkish spend 32 hours online and view an average of 3,044 pages of content per month.

April 2009 figures from Nielsen Online showed that the ten web brands Britons spent the most time on accounted for 45% of all UK internet time – compared to less than 42% in April 2008.

According to the Nielsen data, the average Briton spent 22 hours 20 minutes online or using internet-related applications in April 2009, representing a year on year increase of 34%, up from 16 hours 36 minutes (see The 10 most heavily used web brands account for 45% of total UK internet time).

Elsewhere, a report from the Internet Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers revealed that UK online adspend grew 17.1% in 2008, to £3.4 billion (see UK online adspend grew 17.1% in 2008).
