UK Sees Increase In Online Banner Ads

A new report published by Internet research group Nielsen//NetRatings has ranked the UK 5th in terms of internet banner ad usage, after seeing a 27% rise in adspend in November year on year.

The UK now dominates both the top 15 advertiser table, and the league of online advert publishers in Europe, with the yellow pages online companion, yell.com running 817 campaigns in the UK alone.

The overall total of European banner adverts increased by 24% in November 2004, up from 76,375 in November 2003 to 94,939.

Online auction company Ebay and internet retailer Amazon were ranked third and fourth in Nielsen’s run down of the top 14 advertisers in Europe, both of which ran an impressive number of banner campaigns in the UK during November 2004.

Elsewhere in Europe, Sweden, France and the Netherlands took the top three places in terms of banner ad growth, increasing their online banner adspend by 55%, 41% and 34% respectively. Belgium saw the smallest ad growth, increasing by only 8%.

Across Europe the number of online advertisers increased by 11%, with online advertising campaigns experiencing a 10% growth rate in November on a year on year basis.

Commenting on the latest statistics, Gabrielle Prior, European Internet analyst at Nielsen//NetRatings said: “There are now over 163 million Europeans with access to the Internet, representing a significant audience for advertisers. these results indicate a growing confidence in the values of targeting this group of people and an increasing importance of online in an overall advertising strategy.”
