US Broadband Net Population To Hit 37bn By 2007

The number of broadband internet subscribers in the US will hit 37.3 million by 2007, up from around 12.5 million in the first quarter of this year, according to new research from Leichtman Research Group.

The report, Broadband Internet Growth: On-Target, shows that the penetration of broadband internet access services is set to rise from the current quarter of all internet households to around one half by 2007. Price is a key driver; over twice as many consumers say they are likely to subscribe to broadband services at $30 per month as are at $45 per month, says Leichtman.

“Unrealistic expectations have led some to be disappointed with the growth of broadband,” said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group. “The reality is that higher-priced broadband internet services have followed an aggressive consumer adoption curve, and will continue healthy growth over the next several years.”

This study comes as the ONS and Oftel report a strong rise in the popularity and uptake of broadband services in the UK (see Broadband Net Access Shows Strong UK Growth).

Cable subs to double in three years A separate report from Leichtman predicts that the number of digital cable subscribers in the US will continue to grow from approximately 16 million in Q1 2002 to 32 million in 2005 and 37 million in 2006.
