US Online Commerce Declines For Second Consecutive Quarter

Online retail sales in the US declined for the second quarter in a row, from April to June, according to a report on Europemedia earlier this week.

The article says that according to US government statistics online commerce fell by 1.8% to $7.5 billion (E8.2 billion) in the quarter. This is less severe than the 14.5% decline of the first three months of 2001, it does seems to indicate a downward trend, particularly given that overall retail sales rose by 10.8% in Q2.

However, it should be noted that the online sales figures are not seasonally adjusted to account for holidays and the like, whereas the the main retail sales figures are. Furthermore, the figures do not include airline travel sales, concert tickets and sales at online brokerages.
