US Online Content Spending Up By 19%

The Online Publishers Association and comScore Networks says US online content spending hit a massive $1.56 billion in 2003, up by nearly 19% on the previous year, according to a report from Reuters.

The huge increase in spending on monthly, annual or one off subscription payements were fuelled by the growing two top categories; personals/dating which increased from $302.1 million in 2002 to $449.5 million in 2003 and business/investment which rose to $334 million from $292 million.

The third largest category, entertainment/lifestyle, saw spending fall during the year to $214 million from $227.5 million. However, the sponsors of the study suspect the decline was due to current data collection, which does not include transactions from non-brower internet applications, such as Apple’s iTunes online music store, reports Reuters.
